What is MS? (Multiple Sclerosis)
MS is a chronic disease of the central nervous system. Essentially this is when the immune system has mistaken the brain and spinal cord for the enemy. It then tries to attack the coating of the nerves inappropriately. The coating is called Myelin; this is the fatty tissue that surrounds and protects nerve fibers. When this gets damaged, it causes scar tissue called Sclerosis. The damaged nerves can also be called lesions or plaques. Symptoms of MS could include but are not limited to trouble writing, speaking, or talking, loss of sensation, weakness, pain, and memory. There are over 2.5 million people diagnosed with MS worldwide, and 10,000 of those are children. Roughly there are 200 new cases weekly. Unfortunately, this diagnosis has no cure, but there are ways to maintain it, including medication for some, equipment such as canes, walkers, or braces, and for severe cases, rehabilitation activities.
